U12 Academy

The Lightning Academy is becoming the replacement for the representative (competitive) side of Kanata Soccer.    The focus of the Academy programming is firmly on the process of player development.  Results are seen as secondary in the Academy.  Too much of our youth soccer programming has become focused on the score line of the contest and therefore training has revolved around the development of the entire team at the expense of the individual player.  Academy programming aims to be holistic in its approach.  Along with technical and tactical training the content also focuses on physical and psychological development.  We want to develop the whole player.  With Kanata Soccer’s commitment to Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) comes the need to provide training and competition that is developmentally appropriate for the maturity level of the participant.  A key objective of this program is teaching the participants how to train properly and why training is important.  The goal is to develop respect for training and the work ethic necessary to realize one’s full potential in soccer.

This program is open to male and female players born either 1997 or 1998.  The purpose of this program is to provide a holistic, player-centred high performance development option to those individuals looking to aspire towards one or more of these future goals:

-            U12 Regional team
-            U13 Ontario Soccer Association Region 5 team
-            U14 Ontario Youth Soccer League team

The make-up of the program includes:

      -            Weekly Monday night physical preparation session led by KSC Technical Director Joel MacDonald
-            Weekly Saturday morning skills development session led by former National team and professional player Kristina Kiss
-            Bi-weekly Thursday night 7v7 development scrimmage against selected opposition led by Technical Director Joel MacDonald
-            Bi-weekly Thursday night performance psychology skills training session led by certified sport psychology consultant Keri Hoffman

The content of the program includes:

-            A high level of individual technical development
-            A high level of individual tactical development
-            Some group and team tactical development
-            Physical preparation in speed, strength and suppleness
-            Psychological performance skills training in self-awareness, goal setting, communication, focus,  distraction control, stress management and imagery
-            Individual values development under the motto of the Academy – “Respect and responsibility for life”
-            Required weekly soccer homework

Enrolment is limited.   The selection to the program is on a competitive basis and players will be required to take part in the winter development assessment during the last two weeks of September.  Players scoring high enough in the assessment will be permitted into the Academy.  Previous level of playing experience will also be considered.  All remaining non-selected players will be invited to join the standard winter development session for their age level as it has been presented by Kanata Soccer in previous years.

Mid-season re-testing for Academy players will occur before the Christmas break and each Academy player will receive a personalized soccer development report card the first session back from the break.

Program duration: October 6th to March 7th (20 weeks); required testing last two weeks of September (Official dates and times TBA)

Performance Psychology Training Program Outline

Week 1 Topic: Intro to the Benefits of Mental/Physical Preparation/Self-Awareness
Purpose: In order to consistently perform in any sport at a high level, you must first know yourself inside and out.  This skill will assist in increasing participant understanding of how their reactions, thoughts and feelings (relaxed state, happy, etc.) affect their performances.

Week 2 Topic: Commitment and Motivation
Purpose: Once one has set meaningful goals, one must learn to develop and maintain a strong commitment to achieve them.  Self awareness will be brought in once again to help participants understand what motivates each of them to participate in soccer.  Understanding the reasons they are playing and working so hard will motivate them through any rough patches.

Week 3 Topic: Goal Setting
Purpose: Goals are like a compass because they guide and give you direction as you face ups and downs throughout a sporting career.  One way to enhance participants’ motivation is through the use of goal setting.  Long-term goals provide participants with direction and short-term goals provide them with motivation as well as make long-term goals seem more achievable.

Week 4 Topic: Focus
Purpose: The ability to engage in high quality focus frees an individual to perform their best.    High quality focus enhances performance in practice, training, meetings, competitions and all other learning contexts.   In order to improve the consistency in performance, one needs to understand how focus affects performance.

Week 5 Topic: Refocus/Distraction Control
Purpose: Learning how to maintain a high quality focus on the task at hand and learning how to respond positively to potential distractions (before, during, after competitions).  Understanding what potential distractions exist and learning to recognize when they appear.  Developing a strategy to effectively respond to distractions and refocus (i.e., learning refocusing reminders).

Week 6 Topic: Communication
Purpose: To learn effective communication skills.  This will include learning ways to respond to conflict, make decisions, interpreting feedback, coping with criticism, interpreting and responding to cue, looking at transmitting and receiving information.

Week 7 Topic: Self Control Strategies (self-talk, self-confidence)/Intensity
Purpose: Self-confidence is an extremely important ingredient in the achievement of your goals and success.  It reflects the way you feel about yourself and particularly your belief that you can accomplish what you set out to do.  Self-talk is a skill that teaches the participant to take responsibility for their own thoughts and to maintain a level of control over what one thinks and says to themselves rather than letting their thoughts control them.  During this session the optimal level of intensity for emotional, social, mental, and physical components in both training and matches will also be explored.

Week 8 Topic: Relaxation/Activation
Purpose: Depending on the level of intensity each participant deems ideal for their performance they may need to learn strategies to either decrease or increase arousal.  Relaxation and activation are skills that could assist with obtaining the desired intensity level and bring the participant into the optimal zone of performance.

Week 9 Topic: Coping with Stress
Purpose: To identify the stressors in sport and life and to determine the levels of control for each.    To learn coping techniques for each (i.e., positive self-talk, relaxation, imagery or goal setting).

Week 10 Topic: Imagery
Purpose: Creating images in your head will allow the participant to enter a situation more prepared; thus feeling more confident.    This skill is not only important for performance but could be used as a recovery tool when returning from an injury.
